Early Reader Leveling Guidance

Level 1: Emergent Reader 

  • Single word phrase or 1-2 simple sentences per page
  • Controlled vocabulary
  • Very simple punctuation
  • Easy-to-see print with ample space between words and lines
  • Text consists of a repeating pattern
  • Illustrations  support and reinforce the text

 

Emergent Reader Comparisons

  • Ages 4-7
  • Grades K-1
  • Fountas & Pinnell: A, B, C, D
  • Lexile: BR-70
  • Reading Recovery: 1-6
  • Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA): A-6
  • Scholastic Guided Reading Levels: A, B, C, D

 

Level 2: Beginning Reader

  • Two or more sentences per page
  • More extensive controlled vocabulary
  • Variation of location of text on the page
  • Moderate support from the illustrations
  • Longer sentences
  • More dialogue, punctuation, compound words, and words with endings

 

Beginning Reader Comparisons

  • Ages 6-7
  • Grade 1
  • Fountas & Pinnell: E, F, G, H
  • Lexile: 80-450
  • Reading Recovery:  7-14
  • DRA: 8-14
  • Scholastic Guided Reading Levels: E, F, G, H

 

Level 3: Fluent Reader

  • Extensive use of dialogue
  • Beginning chapter books
  • More print per page with fewer illustrations
  • Varied vocabulary
  • More sophisticated plot and characters
